#028 (2). Speed drawing a (pixel art) level!
November 17th 2017 17:24, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Video Narration Transcript: Hey guys! Sam here. How are you doing?

Today is quite a special edition of the Healing Process: Tokyo devlog as I am going to be drawing a level from the game from start to finish, implement it into the game and let you see how it plays. Letís get going!

So this level will undoubtedly be fixed up countless times before the release, but hereís the initial version. This will be one of at the very least 130 screens from the dream world of Healing Process: Tokyo, that doesnít take into account the places in Tokyo either. It takes me about 6 hours to make each level in their initial form, then a further 4+ hours to fix them up after the initial version (this area has taken 7 hours so far). Of course, some levels take much longer. This is a relatively small area in the game at around 800x420 pixels, however there are screens that exceed 5000 pixels, so this is a very rough indication of the work that goes into creating each level. As you know, I donít use tilesets.

So one of my rules of creating level art for Healing Process: Tokyo is that I canít use reference images while Iím drawing anything from the Dream World. I consider this a kind of punishment rule I made for myself because I feel like rotoscoping animations is a short-cut to getting the work done. I will however, look at a lot of imagery the day before I make the dream world levels. If I had a dream about an icy cave (or if I watched the music video from Radioheadís daydreaming), Iíll remember key aspects of that and find some art or photos that resemble that, make a few notes about them that Iíd like to include and then try to remember them the next day. The reason I do this is because if I fall asleep inbetween working and working, Iíll usually have a dream related to those images. I know it sounds a bit far-fetched, but I can kind of choose what I dream about. This is because I donít sleep very much at all and overwork myself so every time I fall asleep I have a dream straight away and I can steer the direction of the dream. If I canít remember them, they wonít be included, but thereís definitely no looking at references or direct referencing while drawing. Thatís a big no-no.

So, because Iím doing rotoscoping for animations I make other aspects of the game creation harder for myself. Another reason the dream world areas are made completely from scratch is because the other half of the game, in Tokyo is created from heavy referencing of photos Iíve taken. Creating the dream world elements without references will make jumping between the dream world and Tokyo much more exciting, it should feel almost like another game without feeling out of place. Why wonít it feel out of place? Because itís all in the same styleÖ and revolves around the same story. Iíd like to make a vast world for the player to experience without sacrificing the relevant and compelling story.

Recently the flow of the game development is going really well. Itís going so well in fact that it makes me feel like something will go wrong at any moment. Honestly, it feels too good to be true. Iím getting mail list subscribers left and right, and people keep giving me great feedback on the art and the videos. Itís probably because Iím going at it solo that people feel the need to chip in with their advice, needless to say I am very appreciative for the support. I like to work things out and do them in my own way so I canít say how much I will take on board, but itís definitely nice to hear otherís opinions even if itís simply to place where I stand in the whole line-up alongside other creative people.

Tomorrow Iím finally going to be uploading the video of myself walking around Suidobashi, and writing the main theme track for the Suidobashi area. This is one of the 10 major theme tracks for the Tokyo districts. I hope you join me and I look forward to your responses tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to hang around with me. Go join the other 200 people who have recently signed up for the mail updates by visiting this link!

Be sure to watch the video to see the speedpaint in action! Thereís some gameplay in the last 30 seconds or so of the video, if you want to skip ahead.

See you tomorrow where we have a stroll around Tokyo!

November 16th 2017 20:48, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey!
Whatís up. Iíve been editing this video I took outside of me making a main theme song for one of the 10 Tokyo districts (Suidobashi). It will be tomorrowís upload.

There's also a new videos section here, making it easier to stay on top of the videos from the devlog! You asked, I delivered. No problem ;)

Today I also started speedpainting a new pixel level just to show you guys. Hereís a tiny teaser image of it:

Well actually... Iím not sure what will come first, the video composing music or this level speed paint video, nevertheless, one will be tomorrow and one will be the next day.

If youíre enjoying my content please tell me what you want to see, what video/written post you liked the best so far and Iíll provide you with some more updates like that.

Keep looking forward to my mails!

#026. Speedpaint part 1 of 2 (unfinished)
November 15th 2017 23:53, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey!

I did this speedpainting video for you to see, unfortunately I didn't realise I was recording the wrong window when I started doing it so it starts from the middle... sorry. It's also not finished yet... So I'll upload a video of me finishing it later!

Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy it. I'll make sure to get the settings right next time!
This is 1 of 120 monsters from the game known as Quad-idler. There's 119 more monsters to come so you can expect a lot more art too!

Tomorrow will also be a video upload, you lucky people!

#025. Working on Stuff!
November 14th 2017 22:13, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey!

Iím going out tomorrow to make a video for you guys about how I come up with the themes for each of the districts in the game. It involves going to the place and getting a feel of it from what I see and hear, then using that in the feeling of the music.

I hope itíll be quite interesting and it also gets me out of the house. There will be at least 12 parts of this Ďgoing outside to make musicí series, but I might save most of it for the documentary. I am planning the documentary now and I have way too much footage to even fit in 1 and a half hours, but Iíll do my best to keep it concise and to the point.

I hope youíre looking forward to the new videos!

Have a nice day!

Sam

#024. Working on Art
November 13th 2017 23:03, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys,
Iíve had a pretty productive past 24 hours doing some art for the game. Monsters and key characters to give you a better idea of the feeling of the game!

Thanks to our friend LachieD in the Discord chat (join us here), I have been listening to the song ĎIrish Blood, English Heartí by Morrissey on repeat for the past 3 hours. Brilliant lyrics and brilliant music.

In the following video updates you can expect the following;
- A speedpaint video of a monster or character from the game
- The process of making an area motif (theme track) for Healing Process: Tokyo.

Iíll be uploading these soon so keep your eyes peeled!

Track of the day, the aforementioned ĎIrish Blood, English Heartí by Morrissey:

See you in the next update! (video)

#023. To Others / A Realisation.
November 12th 2017 22:52, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was taking some animation reference videos for various weapon combos and had a harsh realisation as I was swinging about a 100yen plastic sword, caught off guard by a little kid looking at me.

To people who donít know whatís going on, seeing a 27 year old record himself swinging a plastic toy sword around or climbing random ladders on other peopleís properties and then walking off must be absolutely mind boggling.

I must look completely insane.

Yes, I know logically that when itís in game and thereís a purpose to it all Ė it will look great and I can be Ďproud of my achievementsí. But in the meantime I must look like a complete headcase.

Just a realisation I had.

Anyway this is brilliant, go and listen to this.

See you laterÖ o.O
Sam

#021. Climbed the Ladder!
November 10th 2017 15:08, (Tokyo)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Healing Process Devlog!

Woo, guess what! I was able to climb the ladder with no trouble.

It took me ages to edit the video from yesterday so I am focusing on some gamedev now. Iíll upload a follow up video tomorrow with the result.

I quite enjoyed working on a video to show progress so I think Iíll upload videos every now and again.

Iíve been listening to this orchestral performance of my favourite game of all time, FFVIIIís soundtrack while working. A really brilliantly rendered and exceptionally powerful set of arrangements.

Thanks for reading! Iíll hit you with a long video post tomorrow.
See you.

Sam
